Cante Alentejano ist ein Chorgesang mit zwei Solostimmen (Punkt und hoch), die sich mit einem Chor abwechseln, an dem sie ebenfalls teilnehmen. Die Strophen werden in einem Zyklus wiederholt, so oft die Sänger es wünschen. Diese Wiederholung sowie das langsame Tempo und die vielen Pausen lassen den Gesang eine sehr schöne Monotonie haben. Die Themen der Lieder, die von Männer- oder Frauengruppen gesungen werden, sind in der Regel traurig. Im Alentejo-Lied wird das, was in der Seele ist, bekannt gemacht, eine Melancholie, wie Sehnsucht, Liebe, wie Wünsche und Erinnerungen an das Land, in dem man geboren wurde. Aber Alentejo und Gesang können auch fröhlich sein. Es gibt sogar ironische oder humorvolle Lieder. Auf jeden Fall haben die lebhaften Stimmen diejenigen verzaubert, die ihnen seit Jahrhunderten zuhören. Der Ursprung des Alentejo-Gesangs ist ungewiss: Gregorianischer Gesang oder arabischer Gesang.
